My 1 Sentence Synopsis of Field of Strong Men:
Cowboy Revenge.
My 1 Sentence Review:
It’s Cowboy Revenge, what more do you need to know?
Slightly Longer but still Brief Synopsis:
Field of Strong Men is a Western short story involving Three brothers who want justice for their father’s murder, but the road to justice turns into the road for revenge, and that is a slippery slope.
My Favorite Characters:
Rondal, the quiet and wise brother.
What Did It Remind Me Of?
It reminded me of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s, but short and condensed. Technically, you could say there’s two families feuding in Field of Strong Men, but that’s not where I drew the comparison, since the story focuses on the one family. My comparison is more about the slippery slope of making bad decisions as one strives to get revenege in the name of justice. In that regard, it very much reminded me of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s story.
What Did I Love?
Rondal, the quiet and wise brother. I felt like he had the most depth and I really like how JC brought him to life.
What Didn’t I Love?
As is often the case with good short stories, the story was confined to the limited word count but could have easily broken down the wall and spread out like the plague. JC had enough story here to write a kick ass novella, or even possibly a novel.
Jack and Jill
The version of Field of Strong Men I purchased also comes with an extra short story called Jack & Jill. This one isn’t a western, but more of a modern-day romance story, involving a guy who’s pining over a girl and trying to work up the courage to ask her out. It was an enjoyable story as well.
